Pete Elsewhere is a self-proclaimed visionary living on the fringes of modern London. Through a series of increasingly questionable encounters - from unsolicited hot takes on AI to a tour of his crumbling flat, an introduction to his weirdo housemate DERP, and an ill-fated day at the skatepark - a documentary crew attempts to understand the man behind the myth. Blending stylised motion-capture animation with deadpan British humour, Pete Elsewhere is a mockumentary about the strange optimism of people who refuse to stop believing in themselves.
In depth
It wasn't until I stood up in front of a crowd at the 1st screening and listened to the words come out of my mouth that I realised Pete Elsewhere was me! An aging creative, trying to keep up with the times and navigate emerging technology. Another friend I showed said she laughed but also felt sad - Pete is a tragic character. That's how I wrote him. I use comedy to mask emotions, but you can only hold the mask for so long. Pete shows his true emotions in the slight pauses, the looks down to the ground, the shake in his voice.

Motion Capture performance: BTS.
I used motion capture technology from Rokoko studios, including the Smart Suit pro II, smart gloves and iPhone facial capture app. As well as a clip microphone to capture audio.
My goal was to develop a technique where I could animate quite quickly, thinking I could make a lot of content with this character. Pete exists online as well as in conventional formats like film and TV. There are obvious budget and time bottlenecks with creating a virtual character, which I wanted to solve.
